The National Institute of Fashion Technology is a group of Fashion institutions of India. The establishment of NIFT took place in the year of 1986 and is approved by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. NIFT Kolkata, West Bengal is one of the Fashion Institutes of India. This college was established in the academic year of 1995. The college is affiliated with Statutory Autonomous.The institute has good infrastructure with all the facilities provided in the campus itself. The campus of NIFT Kolkata covers all the major requirements of the students. The entire campus is enabled with Wi-Fi. It has got one big seminar hall and an auditorium that can accommodate a good number of students. Construction lab, pattern making/draping labs are fully equipped with the latest technologies.

The library is one of the major aspects and is fully-fledged with recent and informative books. Flat B.Ed knitting lab, computerized knitting lab, design studios, weaving lab, textile testing lab, cad studio, jewelry design studio, library design studio and leather processing lab are well built for the ease of the students. The quality of food provided in the cafeteria is quite good. The space and tidiness in the cafeteria are the points to be considered.The institute offers undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs. Courses offered in NIFT Kolkata are Bachelor of Design (B.Design), B.F. Tech (Apparel Production), Master of Fashion Management and Diploma course in Fashion and Clothing Technology. The undergraduate programs are Fashion Designing, Bachelor of Fashion Technology, Leather Design, Textile Design, Fashion Communication, Accessory design, and Knitwear Design. The university offers Master of Fashion Management degree under post graduate program.

The four-year Knitwear Design programme is developed towards creating design professionals who can cater to Knitted Apparel- an exclusive segment in fashion, particularly in sportswear and lingerie.The programme has been designed
to create well-rounded professionals equipped to handle the challenges of circular and flat-bed knitting in the domestic and export fields. They can pursue careers as Designers, Creative Managers, Merchandisers, Production Managers and Entrepreneurs.Knitwear design students are exposed to
a wide milieu of subjects including Fashion Art and Illustration, Garment Construction, Pattern Making for Knits, Flat and Circular Knitting, Computerized Flat Knitting, Trends and Forecasting, Design Process, Knitwear Production and Planning, Merchandising and Marketing. Traditional design acumen is honed with craft surveys, design and documentation.
